2023 Conference Abstract Guidelines
The Conference Planning Committee invites you to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations for the 4th Annual National Big Data Health Science Conference, that will be held February 10-11, 2023, in Columbia, SC.
Our goals for the 2023 Annual National Big Data Health Science Conference:
- Stimulate further advancements in Big Data health science research through rich interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration
- Be a multidisciplinary scientific venue for the exchange of new concepts, methods, and results to encourage the sharing of theoretical, methodological, and substantive knowledge from Big Data health science research
- Identify new issues that are, to date, understudied in this area and then generate, promote, and support innovation in Big Data health science
- Promote open discussion of critical questions in Big Data health science with particular emphasis on emerging methods which may contribute to the future of healthcare and facilitate the exchange of ideas and findings that could shape the future of Big Data health science.
The Conference Planning Committee welcomes proposals responsive to the 2023 conference theme, “Unlocking the Power of Big Data in Health: Translating Data Science into Program Development and Implementation”. Proposals will ideally focus on one or more of the following content areas:
- Electronic Health Records
- Artificial Intelligence for Sensing and Diagnosis
- Genomics
- Geospatial/GIS
- Social Media
Submitting Your Abstract
1. You can use the submission form on this page (Abstract Submission Page) to submit abstracts for the conference.
- Abstracts must be submitted in English.
- Abstracts must not have been published or presented previously.
- Maximum of two first authored abstracts per delegate (a delegate can be co-author of multiple abstracts).
- Abstracts should be no more than 500 words.
- Submission of an abstract constitutes a commitment by the author(s) to present it if accepted. Failure to present, if not justified, will jeopardize future acceptance of abstracts.
- The presenter is responsible for all expenses associated with the submission and presentation of an abstract (e.g., registration, travel, etc.).
- The deadline for submission is December 12, 2022. Notification emails about acceptance of abstracts will be sent by December 19, 2022.
Presentation Format
Abstracts can be submitted for either oral presentations or poster presentations. Oral presentations include both 45-minute plenary presentations and ~15-minute breakout panel presentations for target research areas (AI, EHR, genomics, geospatial, social media). Poster presenters must present their posters at a designated hour and participate in a Q&A. More details about specific presentation times and requirements will be shared with delegates upon abstract acceptance.
Content of the Abstracts
All abstracts must be responsive to the conference theme “Unlocking the Power of Big Data in Health – Translating Data Science into Program Development and Implementation”.
Abstracts must fall under one of two categories:
- Research based abstracts that describe empirical studies or methodological studies. Research-based abstracts must focus on data or data analytics in the following areas:
- Electronic Health Records
- Social Media data
- Genomic data
- Geospatial data
- AI for Sensing and Diagnosis
- Program based abstracts that describe problems or lessons learned from program development or implementation or policy issues related to Big Data analytics and their application in health science research in the following areas:
- Infrastructural and capacity development
- Professional development
- Community/industry engagement
- Academic training
- Methodological advances
Abstract Format
Structured abstracts are required for all submissions.
Option 1: Research based abstracts:
- Study Objectives (hypothesis or a description of the problem)
- Method (key descriptions of study design, data sources and data analytics)
- Results (specific results in a summarized format)
- Discussion (brief comments, conclusions and implications)
Option 2: Program based abstracts:
- Issues (short statement of the issue or issues that the abstract addresses)
- Project (brief description of the project, program, experience, service or study and its results and findings)
- Lessons learned (summary of the lessons learned and their implications)
Abstract Evaluation and Selection
All abstracts will be reviewed and evaluated by a Scientific Committee that consists of leading scholars and faculty in each content area. If necessary, external reviewers will be solicited at the discretion of the Scientific Committee and the conference organizers. The reviewers will make recommendation as to whether an abstract should be accepted, and they will consider your preference when making suggestions as to which assignment is appropriate for an accepted abstract (oral session, poster session).
Abstract Awards
Two types of poster presentation awards will be provided at the conference:
1. Best Poster Presentation of All Submission
2. Best Poster Presentation by Emerging Scholars (i.e., students, post-doctoral presenters)
